Based on scientific observations that Crete, Greece, and southern Italy have one of the highest rates of chronic diseases, the Mediterranean diet has the most long life expectancies. The Mediterranean diet can help you lose weight, prevent cancer, manage diabetes, and most importantly, improve brain and cardiovascular health.
This diet is similar to any other healthy diet. Most other diets draw inspiration from it. It will include lots of fruits, vegetables, whole-grains legumes and nuts, as well as some poultry and low-fat dairy. There will also be plenty of olive oil, herbs/spices, weekly eggs, and wine if you like. You will limit red meat, saturated fats and sweets as well as processed foods.
Because you get plenty of healthy fats (olive, fish, nuts), vitamins and antioxidants (fruits, vegetables, herbs/spices/whole grains, legumes, etc.), the Mediterranean diet is great for your health. You are also reducing the intake of foods that have been scientifically proven to increase our risk for disease, such as saturated fat and processed sugar. The diet is recommended by nutritionists and medical doctors, even if you don’t consider the longevity of the Mediterranean population. It is nutritiously sound and doesn’t require any extreme restrictions.
