A smoothie made with dairy products is very similar to a milkshake. However, the former contains more fruit and uses more ice cream or frozen yogurt. A green smoothie can be brightened up by adding a few kiwis to it. This is especially true if there are lots of greens. A smoothie’s healthiness is dependent on the ingredients used and the proportions. Smoothies can contain large quantities of fruit and vegetables. These smoothies are recommended for a healthy diet, and should not be used as a meal substitute. High amounts of sugar in fruit juice can lead to weight gain and increase caloric intake. In smoothie recipes, protein powders, sweeteners, and ice cream are all used. Some of these ingredients contribute mainly to flavor, but also increase caloric intake. A green smoothie usually contains 40-50% of green vegetables. These are typically raw leafy green vegetables such as spinach, kale and swiss-chard. The rest of the ingredients can be either fruit or mostly fruit. Spirulina and wheatgrass are good choices as well. Although most green leafy vegetables are bitter when raw, this can be tempered by using certain vegetables that have a milder flavor or combining them with other fruits.
